The chat room

ScotMesh has one chat, the room scotmesh, with three ways into it. Use whichever suits you; everyone sees the same messages. It is the place to say hello, ask for help, and find out who else is on.

Out of the box

Once you are connected to ScotMesh:

• MeshChatX: open the chat section, pick the ScotMesh hub (or add it by the address above) and join scotmesh. Or message the LXMF group.
• Sideband and the iPhone apps (Columba, Retichat): start a conversation with 625ad393ca4df62a1382f9d936322a0a and send /join. From then on the chat arrives like any other conversation, as Name: message, and anything you send reaches everyone.
• NomadNet: open the chat page above to read. To post, turn on "Identify when connecting" for that node.

Full installation

With Reticulum installed yourself, any RRC client works: Ratspeak, rrc-tui, rrc-gui, WeeChat (with the RRC plugin) and Eridanus. Point the client at the hub address, then:

/join scotmesh

The hub announces itself every 30 minutes, so a client that lists hubs will usually show it without the address being typed.

What to expect

• Catching up. When you come back to the room over RRC you get exactly what was said since you last left, with the times it was said, and nothing you have already seen. The first time you visit you get the last 10 messages. /history 50 shows more. The chat page marks what is new since your last visit. Messages are kept for 7 days.
• Your name is yours everywhere. The first name you use (your nickname, your LXMF display name, or /nick YourName) belongs to your Reticulum identity on all three ways in, and nobody else can take it or something that looks like it (A1ex counts as Alex). Until you have one you show as guest- and four characters of your identity. /leave gives your name up.
• One identity, one name. Each app or device normally has its own identity. MeshChatX uses the same identity for RRC and LXMF, so one name covers both there; a phone and a laptop with different identities need different names (or restore the same identity on both).
• LXMF when you are on RRC. /lxmf off stops group messages without leaving; /lxmf auto pauses them while you are in the room over RRC and starts them again when you leave; /lxmf on is the default. When they start again you get one note saying how many you missed.
• Away from the network. If your messenger is offline, group messages wait on our propagation node until you collect them.
• It can be quiet. Scotland is not a big place for Reticulum yet. If nobody answers, leave it open, or ask on the ScotMesh Discord.

Commands

Operators

Room operators can set the topic and, if it ever comes to it, remove someone. Ask in the room or on the ScotMesh Discord if you would like to help look after the scotmesh room.

Your own rooms

Anyone on RRC can create a room on the hub with /join followed by a new name. Rooms exist while someone is in them, unless their founder registers them with /register.
