Why 7 hops
Scotland is not flat. Towns that are close together are often split by hills, so a message may need a few hops to reach a high router (Tomtain and Cant Hill are the main ones) and a few more to reach the edge of the mesh.
The official default is 3. More hops means more airtime, and on a flat, busy mesh a high limit adds congestion. We use 7 because of the terrain.
How flooding works
Meshtastic uses managed flooding. Before a node rebroadcasts a packet, it listens to check whether another node already has. Nodes further away (lower SNR) wait a shorter time, so they tend to relay first and the message moves outward. Routers relay with higher priority.
Broadcast intervals
Keep the mesh quiet, especially for the solar routers:
- Node Info: every 4 hours or more.
- Telemetry: off, or every 4 hours or more. It is off by default on current firmware.
- Position: every 4 hours or more on a fixed node.
